What is a Trommel Screen (Rotary Screen)?

A Trommel Screen, often referred to as a Rotary Screen, is a widely used screening machine in modern waste processing plants. It consists of a large rotating drum with openings of specific sizes that allow materials to be separated according to their particle size.

When mixed waste enters the trommel, the drum slowly rotates at an angle, causing the material to tumble and move forward. Smaller particles pass through the holes in the drum while larger items continue to travel along its length until they are discharged at the end. This continuous rolling motion ensures efficient and reliable separation, even with mixed or irregular waste streams.

In waste management, trommel screens are essential for municipal solid waste treatment, composting operations, RDF fuel preparation, and recycling facilities. By classifying waste by size at an early stage, they make downstream processes more efficient, reduce manual sorting, and improve the overall recovery of reusable materials.

Working Principle of Trommel Screen

The trommel screen working principle is based on rotary motion and particle separation:
Waste is fed into the inclined rotating drum.
As the drum turns, material is lifted, dropped, and rolled forward.
Small fractions pass through the perforated holes.
Larger items continue along the drum until they exit at the discharge point.

This continuous rolling and loosening action delivers efficient separation, even with moist, sticky, or mixed waste streams.
